At 4200 meters, Volcan Tajumulco is the highest point in central America, and the 69th (hehe) hightest point in North America. It can be completed in a single day, but it's well worth camping overnight to catch the sun rise over the mountains.

Volcan Santa Maria is a 20 minute drive outside of Xela and it's 3800 meters in height. It's responsible for the 3rd largest eruption of the 20th century, when it blew ash landed as far away as Florida. Now it's a lot more stable and makes a great day hike.
